Chapter 15: The Family Office Bank

The bank that kept the family office's money was in a stone building with no sign on the door.

Dad walked in at nine with me on one side and Brynn on the other.

Dustin came two steps behind.

Dad had given Brynn her phone back at breakfast, in front of everyone, and said only, "I should not have taken it."

She had held it in both hands all the way here.

A woman in a gray suit met us at the desk and smiled at my father.

"Mr. Kessling. We weren't expecting you. Your son said you'd be traveling."

"My son says a good many things," Dad said. "I'd like to see every account that carries a Kessling name, with my signature on the paper or without it."

"Your son is the signatory on the family office accounts."

"I am the chairman of the company that owns them."

The banker looked at him, and then at me.

"This is my daughter," Dad said. "The account in question is hers."

She took us to a small room with a long table, a screen and a box of tissues nobody touched.

I put the bank book down.

The banker typed for a long time.

Her smile went away a little at a time.

"This account was opened a month ago," she said. "Two million dollars was deposited."

"Yes."

"And thirty thousand more on the first of the month."

"Yes."

"They were transferred out the same day."

I felt Dad go still beside me.

"To where?" he said.

"To an operating account of the family office. Account two." She turned the screen toward us. "Signed by Mr. Caleb Kessling, each time, as the account's controlling officer."
