Chapter 21: No Clock

He arrived at six fifty-two and sat in his car for eight minutes.

I watched him from the window, over the bakery sign, with a wooden spoon in my hand.

At seven exactly he came up the stairs with nothing in his hands at all.

"You brought nothing," I said.

"You told me not to."

"Nobody follows instructions that well."

"I've been practicing," he said, and then Pickle hauled himself off the bed and leaned his whole gray weight against Jasper's knees.

The sublet had a bed, a couch, and a kitchen the size of a phone booth.

I had made spaghetti on a hot plate, and I had burned the garlic.

We ate it on the floor with our backs against the couch, out of two mismatched bowls.

Pickle sat between us and stared at his noodles with great sorrow until Jasper gave him one.

"You're not supposed to feed him," I said.

"He's a hundred and ten in dog years."

"He's seventy."

"Then he's earned it."

Jasper picked the recipe box off the coffee table and lifted the lid.

He held very still, and I realized he had never expected to see it again.

The first card had a line through it.
