Chapter 23: The Last Line

I wrote line twelve on Monday morning at ten to seven, in his kitchen, on the back of the appointment card.

The house was a brick one in Lowry Hill with a front door that stuck.

He had never once sat on the back stoop.

He had bought it in March.

He had a key now, and a mailbox, and a recycling bin he did not understand.

I stood at the window in his white shirt, holding a mug of coffee.

I watched him drag the bin to the curb in his bare feet.

He read the schedule taped to the lid, frowned at it, and dragged it back.

I laughed so hard I had to put the coffee down.

The card lay on the table by the toaster, soft as cloth by now.

Line eleven was in Adelaide's hand.

Under it, in black pen, I wrote the twelfth thing I wanted before I was supposed to be done.

Say yes when nobody is dying.

I read it twice, and I put the cap on the pen.

He came in through the back door with dew on his ankles, and he saw the card before he saw me.
