Chapter 13: The File
The memo was typed on one page, and Brittany read it standing up.
Subject: Faulkner, Brittany. Age 28. Holder of thirty percent of Bevan Systems, full voting rights.
Holding was placed in her name by the founder and is described to her as a formality. She does not know its value.
This is the lock. It cannot be bought, forced or outvoted. It can only be reached through her.
Strathern estate: paternity result pending, expected within the fortnight. The old man's office has confirmed she will inherit. Proposal to follow her signature.
Do not tell her what it is for. She will refuse.
The date at the top was eleven days before the attorney called her on the courthouse steps.
Under the memo lay a photograph.
It showed a young woman at a desk in a dormitory room, with a laptop open and her chin on her hand.
She had Elliot's grey eyes.
Someone had written on the back, in small square handwriting she knew from the contract: Four years ago. Last day she opened the laptop.
Brittany turned the page.
Dalton's early code, printed side by side with another file.
The lines matched. They matched for pages, down to a misspelled word in a comment.
The second file's header carried a name that was not Dalton's.
She did not hear him come in.
"Brittany."
He stood in the doorway with the phone in his hand.
He looked at the folder, then at her face, and she watched him decide not to lie.
"Eleven days before the lawyer called," she said. "You knew I was a Strathern before I did."
