Chapter 19: The Match on the Mantel
Elliot did not answer the old man until the maid had taken Brittany upstairs.
He watched her go. On the landing she turned and looked down at him, tired and upright, and then she went on into her father's house alone.
The study smelled of leather and old pipe smoke. The old man sat in his dead son's chair with the cane across his knees.
"I asked her a question on the lawn," the old man said. "Now I'll ask you one."
"Ask."
"Eleven days before my lawyer rang that girl, your office sent mine a polite inquiry. Who held thirty percent of Bevan Systems in the name of Faulkner?"
"Your office did not answer it."
"My office told yours to wait." The old man tapped the cane once on the rug. "Neil's will named her a week before that. He wrote his daughter's name on the last page himself, in the hospital, with a borrowed pen."
Elliot said nothing.
"Then I telephoned you. Nine at night. Do you remember?"
He remembered. He had taken it for the courtesy of an old family friend.
"You said the lock I wanted had an owner," said Elliot slowly, "and that she was about to become very hard to reach."
"And that you should be the man standing next to her when she did."
"You handed her to me."
"I handed you a door. You'd found the lock yourself, and I will give you that." The old man's eyes were pale and unkind. "I did not choose a gentle man, Kincaid. I chose the one man in this country who wanted what she would want, and who would stand beside her while she took it."
