Chapter 21: Listing Night

The ceremony hall of the Goldmont Exchange held six hundred people, and every seat had been filled by half past seven.

Dalton stood on the stage in a navy suit with the Bevan Systems logo glowing blue behind him.

Cameras ran along the side aisle, and a brass bell hung on a rope at his shoulder.

Brittany came in at five to eight, in a white suit, on Elliot's arm.

The old woman walked on her other side, with her cane and her driver.

Heads turned all the way down the hall.

Dalton saw them from the stage and stopped in the middle of a sentence.

Then he smiled, the warm tired smile he had used on her for six years, and lifted the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, my wife has been unwell this month. I'm glad she's here tonight."

A low laugh went through the front rows.

Brittany walked up the steps onto the stage.

"Brittany," Dalton said, very softly, off the microphone. "Not now. Please."

"You said wife, in front of the press." She held out her hand to the exchange official standing at the edge of the stage. "I'd like to read it out."

The official, who was grey in the face, gave her the microphone.

She turned to the technician at the side desk. Elliot's assistant was standing beside him with a tablet.

"Put it on his screen, please."
