Chapter 4: The Widow at the Door

Brittany put her hand flat on the door.

It stopped an inch from the frame.

"I didn't come to ask for a room," she said. "I came to see what my father left."

"Your father left a widow." Marguerite didn't raise her voice. "And a household that doesn't take in strays."

Behind her in the hall, a maid stopped with a tray of cups.

A gardener paused at the edge of the lawn. Two men in dark suits, relatives by the look of them, had come out onto the side steps to watch.

"Show her to the gate, please," Marguerite said, to no one in particular.

Nobody moved.

"Then I will do it myself." She pulled the door open again and stepped onto the porch.

She took Brittany's bag off her shoulder and dropped it down the steps.

It landed on the gravel and split open at the zipper. A lipstick rolled out and a folded lease and the hospital's discharge paper.

One of the men on the side steps laughed.

Brittany bent down and picked up the lipstick first.

She did it slowly, so they could all see her do it. Then she stood and looked at the people watching.

"I'm Brittany Faulkner," she said, loud enough for the lawn. "I signed the estate papers yesterday. As of yesterday, the house, the cars, the staff payroll and the shares are mine. The lawyer's office can confirm it."

"The lawyer's office takes orders from the board," Marguerite said.

"The board answers to the largest shareholder."

The maid with the tray had gone very still. The gardener took off his cap.

"You little..." Marguerite stopped herself. Her lips were white. "You think a piece of paper makes you one of us? You have no manners, no connections, nothing. You'll be eaten alive by Friday."
