Chapter 24: Bitter Burn
He did not point it at me.
He pointed it at my father's chest from three feet away.
His hand shook, for the first time in all the years I had known him.
"You wrote my name," Tyson said.
"I gave you eleven years.
"I put men in the ground for you."
"Tyson," my father said calmly, "put it down."
"You said the house was mine."
"I said a lot of things to a lot of men."
It was the wrong thing to say.
Tyson's finger whitened on the trigger.
I moved.
I had spent my life learning to stay still, and I used the last of it crossing the carpet in two steps.
I put my left hand over the slide of his gun and my right on the inside of his wrist.
I turned my whole body, the way I'd been taught at fourteen, and the pistol came out of his hand and hit the floor.
He grabbed for my hair.
I put my knee into his stomach.
When he folded, I drove his head down against the edge of the table, hard enough to rattle the china.
"Down," I said.
He went down.
He lay on my mother's rug with blood running from his scarred nose, and for once he did not smile.
The union man stepped over him and kicked the pistol across the floor.
