Chapter 17: The Incline
"Dinner," I said.
"Dinner. A restaurant. Chairs. Somebody else does the dishes."
"That's a date."
"That's what I'm asking."
He didn't look away.
"Saturday," I said. "I'm off Saturday."
"I know your shifts."
"I know you know my shifts."
Ruthann's voice came down the stairs.
"Say yes before the onions burn!"
"She said yes," Morgan called back.
"Good! It's about damn time!"
Saturday took nine years to come.
My doctor had cleared me at my checkup the Tuesday before.
She'd smiled at me over her clipboard and said, "Everything. You're healed. Go live your life."
I hadn't told anybody that part.
I told Ruthann that part.
She stopped chewing for a long moment.
"I'm taking the baby in the spare room Saturday night," she said. "With the door shut. And my good earplugs."
"Ruthann."
"I'm fifty-six. I wasn't born yesterday, and neither was that man."
Morgan picked me up at six in his own truck.
It was an old green Ford with a bench seat and a gear stick coming up out of the floor between us.
