Chapter 18: Brody

Ty looked at the photo for a moment and felt nothing at all.

Then he looked at Brody.

"That's from the first morning," Ty said.

"Good eye. The light was bad, but I do all right." Brody slid the phone against his chest. "Here's my offer. You quit the team tonight, the way your daddy wanted. I delete it."

"And if I don't?"

"Then Coach gets it, and the athletic director, and the scouts who come Friday for your boyfriend."

Brody smiled with his flat grin.

"The captain stood up in front of forty guys and lied about your numbers. Nobody's going to say he did it because you're good. They're going to say he did it because you're his."

"That's not what happened."

"It's what it looks like. And looks are all I need."

A door opened down the hall.

Lars came out of the locker room with his gear bag on his shoulder and stopped four feet away.

He looked at the phone. He looked at Brody.

He had heard every word. He had been standing behind the door the whole time.

"Let me see it," Lars said.

Brody held it up, still grinning.

Lars studied the picture for a while.

"Good photo," he said. "Come inside."

"What?"

"You wanted an audience. Come inside."

Lars held the locker room door open with his foot.

Brody's grin slipped a quarter inch. He had not planned on this.

But the room was full of his teammates, and walking away now would look worse.

He went in.

The room went quiet as they walked through it. Half the team was still in towels.

Cullen was sitting on a bench with one skate off.

"Hanratty has something to show you," Lars said. "Go ahead."

Brody turned the phone over in his hand.

"Fine," he said, loud enough for the whole room. "You want it? Here. Your captain has been messing around with Ingram since February."
