Chapter 19: Rule Four

The travel sheet for St. Anselm had one line that nobody on the bus said a word about.

HOLMGREN / INGRAM, room 508, king.

Lars had typed it himself, in the square black letters, and Coach had initialed it without looking up.

Now the door of 508 clicked shut behind them, and for the first time in a month Ty did not have to listen for footsteps in the hall.

He dropped his bag. He stood in the middle of the carpet.

"Rule four," he said.

Lars, still holding the key card, went quiet.

"It ends the night the season ends," Ty said. "That's what you told me against the boards. Do you remember?"

"I remember."

"Everyone knows now. Nobody's hiding anything. So tell me what rule four is for."

"Ty."

"Say it, Cap. Say it like you did then." Ty heard how thin his own voice was. "Four weeks. Then you sign with somebody and I'm a guy you used to share a bus with."

Lars set the key card down on the dresser very carefully.

"I was wrong about the rules."

"You were wrong about most of them."

"I'm wrong about that one too." Lars crossed the room. "I'm overruling it."

"You can't overrule your own terms."

"Watch me."

He put both hands on Ty's face and kissed him, hard and slow, with a kind of fury that was almost grief.

Ty kissed him back and fisted both hands in his shirt.

"Say it again," Ty said into his mouth.

"I'm not letting you go."

"Again."

"I'm not letting you go, Prince."

Ty made a sound he could not have stopped, and Lars walked him back until his knees hit the bed.
