Chapter 20: The Draft Table
Lars Holmgren had barely slept when his agent sat down across from him at the hotel breakfast table.
The agent was a lean man in a suit who had driven three hours in the dark to say what he could have said on the phone.
He had a laptop under his arm. He set it on the table and turned it around.
"It has two hundred thousand views," the agent said. "On a board you've never heard of."
On the screen was the photo.
Under it were four hundred comments, and Lars did not read them.
He looked at the picture of himself with his hands in Ty's jacket at six in the morning, and what he felt was strange.
It was not shame. He looked for shame, honestly, and could not find it.
It was closer to relief.
"Who sent it?" Lars asked.
"Does it matter?"
"No."
"There's a club that owns your draft rights," the agent said. "I called their general manager at eleven last night."
"And?"
"He said he'd call back. He called back at six."
Lars waited.
"I'll tell you what they want, and then I'll tell you what I'd do." The agent folded his hands. "They want a statement. Short, quiet, from you. 'Private matter, I'm focused on the team.' They'll back it. In a month nobody remembers."
"A quiet statement."
"Quiet is cheap. It protects the pick."
Lars looked out of the window.
Across the parking lot the team bus idled with its door open, and Cullen Pratt was sitting on the bottom step eating a muffin and watching the hotel door.
