Chapter 18: The Bride Refuses to Be Bait
"Give me the card," I said.
Orazio looked at it, then at me, and did not give it up.
"Bianca, last night a knife went into my son."
"I was there."
"Eight men came for you."
"I was there for that too."
"I will not put you at an altar in front of Silvio's guns."
"It isn't your altar to cancel."
I held out my hand until he put the card in it.
I read the signature once and tore the card in half.
Then I walked down the stairs to the front parlor.
It was eight in the morning, and the room was already full.
Every captain of both families had been called to the brownstone at dawn, in their good coats.
Twenty-six men stood among the sofas, smelling of coffee and cigars, talking in low voices.
They went quiet when I came in with half a church card in each hand.
My father stood by the window.
Dario had come down behind me, one arm in a sling, and stopped at the door.
