On Friday evening, Saint Rocco's was lit for the first time since the night I had hidden behind its pillar.
Every chandelier burned.
The priest stood at the altar rail in a black cassock, holding a clipboard.

I walked the aisle in the navy dress I had worn the first day.

Eighteen Castellane men were already in the choir loft and the sacristy, quiet as furniture.
I had walked them through it myself that afternoon.
