Chapter 21: The Altar
My father kissed my cheek at the altar rail and stepped back to the first pew, empty hands folded.
I turned to Dario, and he took my hand.
His fingers were cold.
"Breathe," I said under the organ.
"I am."
"You're not."
His shoulders loosened, and for one second he almost laughed.
The priest opened his book and spoke the opening words in a steady voice.
Four hundred people sat in the pews.
I felt the church waiting for something to break.
"If any person here knows a reason," the priest said, "why these two should not be joined, let them speak now."
Silvio stood up in the third row.
He did it slowly, buttoning his coat.
"I do," he said.
A sound went through the pews.
