Chapter 24: Vows
The priest began again from the first word, and nobody in the church made a sound.
The organ sat silent.
The light came through the high windows in long bars across the stone.
I stood before the altar with my hand in Dario's, and the pistols were gone from the aisle.
Somebody had swept them into a basket during the pause.
A boy of about twelve, a captain's grandson, had been sent to carry the basket out, and he did it with great solemn importance.
I heard a few people laugh softly.
The priest looked up from his book.
"The couple has asked to say their own words," he said. "Dario."
Dario turned to me.
His sling was gone.
He had taken it off, and the shoulder under his jacket stood stiff.
But he held his hand out to me.
"Bianca," he said.
His voice was low, and it reached the last pew.
"I came to Chicago hoping you'd say no."
"I thought if you were free to refuse me, you'd never have to be afraid of me."
