Chapter 9: Fertile
He came out of the clinic twenty minutes later with a face I couldn't read.
He walked past the driver, got in the back seat beside me, and shut the door.
"Adriano?"
"Not here," he said. "Not yet."
He took my hand and held it the whole way to the lake.
The Corsini lake house sits on a bluff in Geneva-on-the-Lake, an hour east of Cleveland.
Nothing is near it but pines and a long gray beach.
By the time we got there the sun was low.
A white van was already in the drive, and two big men in leather jackets stood on the porch.
The side door of the van slid open.
Cinzia climbed down in a gray sweatshirt with her cast held against her chest.
She looked small, and she looked alive.
I don't remember crossing the gravel.
I remember her good arm around my neck and mine around her back, and the smell of flour in her hair.
"I thought you'd hate me," she whispered.
"I thought you were dead," I said.
We cried, standing in the drive in the cold.
When we finally let go she looked past me at Adriano, who stood by the car with his hands in his pockets.
"Thank you," Cinzia said, in a shaky voice.
"Eat something," he said. "Sleep. Nobody will find you here."
Then he looked at me, and the look went through me.
