Chapter 13: Why He Lied
The point of the scalpel pressed a dent into his skin, right over his heart.
I did not push.
I only let him feel that I could.
"Tell me why," I said.
Rorik kept his eyes on mine.
"Because you would be dead in a week if I had told you," he said.
"I would have been careful."
"You would have been honest, and the court would have read it off your face."
"So I'm a bad liar."
"You're the worst I've ever seen."
"That's the only compliment you've given me."
"It's a true one."
I pressed a little harder, and a bead of blood rose under the blade.
His heartbeat knocked in my ribs, fast now, and it was fear, but not for himself.
"Say the rest," I said.
"The rite-keeper told me the night before the cup."
"If the court learned that the king's life hung on one Fen healer, every knife in this keep would turn toward you."
"They would not need to touch me at all."
"Kill the woman, and the king goes down with her, and nobody has to find a way past my guard."
