Chapter 14: Twelve Houses
Rorik crossed the room and pulled the door open with one hand.
The Chancellor stood on the threshold with his rings folded in front of him and two grey-coated guards at his back.
He did not look afraid.
He looked entirely pleased with himself.
"Majesty," he said, bowing.
"How much did you hear?" said Rorik.
"Enough to know the oath runs the other way."
"Enough to know the king has hidden it from his own court for two moons."
"Enough to know that the old law has a name for a king like that."
"Say it."
"Unseated."
He smiled gently at me over Rorik's shoulder.
"The Twelve Houses sit at noon," he said. "I have already sent the summons."
He walked away down the corridor with his guards behind him, and his footsteps never hurried once.
Embla and Brack came up the stairs at a run.
Rorik told them everything in four sentences, standing in the doorway with blood drying on his chest.
Brack sat down on the floor.
Embla stared at me.
"You had a knife on him," she said. "You had him in your hands, and you didn't."
"I'm a healer."
"You're a fool."
"So is he," I said. "You've both noticed."
Her mouth twitched, in spite of herself.
