I had my fingers on the lord's throat before anyone else moved.
No pulse.
Her skin was already going cool, and her tongue, when I turned her face, was the colour of a plum.
"She's dead," I said.
The hall exploded.
Chairs went over.
Lords shouted, and a woman screamed from the serving doors.
Rorik was on his feet, and Brack had his sword out and his back to the king.
"The healer touched her," said Gisbert Rook, in a voice that carried over all of it.
"The healer had her hands on the lord of the High Pass the instant before she died."
"I have told you, my lords, what she is."
"Seize her."
Two grey-coated guards started down the table.
"Stop," said Rorik.
They stopped.
He did not raise his voice.
He did not need to.
"Anyone who lays a finger on her answers to me.
"Brack, hold the doors.
