Chapter 21: The Hall
We reached the throne hall as the grey light came through the east windows.
The doors stood half open, and I could hear Gisbert's gentle voice from the corridor.
"...found at the foot of the Moon Stone, my lords.
"The king, and the woman he was bound to.
"Murdered by Fen hands, and I will carry the grief of it to my own grave."
Someone gasped.
Someone else began to cry.
I looked at Rorik, and he looked at me, and he tucked my hand into his arm.
Brack and Embla dragged the hooded man up behind us.
Tobren came last, with a guard's cloak around him and a leather purse in his fist.
"Ready?" said Rorik.
"No," I said. "Open the doors."
Brack kicked them wide.
The Twelve Houses sat in their half ring, grey-faced and sleepless.
The Moon's bowl stood in the middle of the floor with its black and white stones.
In front of it stood Gisbert Rook, with his rings folded and his silver chain bright on his chest.
One hand lay on the velvet cushion beside the stone seat, where the crown of the Stone Court rested on its pillow.
