Chapter 17: The Station
Mickey called the station from the hotel bathroom with the water running.
A detective picked up, a man with a voice like gravel in a can.
"I'm in New York," Mickey said. "I'm Bound to the man I'm with, and I can't leave him. I'll walk in the minute we land on Monday."
"I'm pregnant, Detective. I'm not running anywhere. I can't run a mile."
The detective gave him till Monday night.
When Mickey came out of the bathroom, Vin was sitting on the edge of the bed with his phone in his hand.
"I can make one call," Vin said.
"No."
"One call, and that warrant goes in a drawer."
"No calls. No favors. No Family lawyer in a three-thousand-dollar suit."
Mickey sat down beside him.
"If you buy me out of this, everybody on Milwaukee Avenue says the locksmith's son is a thief who sleeps with the Bianchis. Same as they said about my dad."
"I walk out on my own, or I don't walk out."
Vin put the phone face down on the bed.
"Okay," he said.
This time Mickey didn't mind it.
New York signed Vin's paper on Monday at noon.
