Chapter 20: Lot 114
"A bank that doesn't exist," Vin said in the morning, over coffee he drank standing in Mickey's kitchen.
"Banks don't vanish. They get bought."
"Sit down."
Vin sat down.
Mickey called the bank that bought it.
He was on hold for forty minutes with a song about sunshine.
Then a woman in a records office told him what happens to safe-deposit boxes when a bank closes.
The boxes move to the new bank's vault.
The renters keep paying, or they don't.
When a renter stops paying for long enough, the box gets drilled, the contents get bagged and sealed, and they go to auction.
"Box one-fourteen," she said. "Rent was paid every year in cash, by mail. The last payment was a year ago November."
"Nothing since."
A year ago November.
The month before the Don died.
"Where did the contents go?"
"A storage auction house in Cicero. Sealed lots." Keys clicked. "That lot's in this Saturday's sale. Lot 114."
"Can anybody bid?"
"Anybody with certified funds."
Mickey hung up.
