Chapter 8: Two Cars

Rafe was awake before I touched him.

"Two cars," he said, and he was already pulling on his trousers.

"Who knows we're here?"

"Nobody who should."

He took the pistol off the nightstand and a second one out of the bag under the bed.

He put the second one in my hand.

"Safety's here. Pull here. Hold it with both hands."

"I know how to shoot."

"You know how to shoot a paper target."

"Then I'll shoot a paper man."

He almost smiled.

"Stay in the loft. Get under the bed. If anyone but me comes up those stairs, you fire."

"Rafe."

"Livia."

He kissed me once, hard, and went down.

I heard the front door lock, the bolts, the curtain rings.

Outside, car doors opened and closed, quietly.

Then boots on gravel.

Five sets of boots, maybe six.

I crept to the loft railing in the dark and looked down.

The front window burst inward in a shower of glass.

Gunfire filled the cabin.

Rafe dropped behind the kitchen island and fired back twice, and I heard a man shout outside.

Bullets chewed the wall above him.

The refrigerator burst.

Water ran across the floor.

He was pinned.

He could not move out from behind the island without being cut in half, and they were spreading out to come in through the back.

I could see the back door from where I lay.

I could see a dark shape cross the porch window, and then another.

They were going to come in from both sides.

I looked at the loft window.
