Chapter 21: Dottie's Game
The pond lay behind the arena, past the parking lot and a row of bare birch trees.
Rhett had checked the ice twice with a chisel before he let anyone step on it.
"Four inches," he told Dottie. "That's plenty."
"I said it was plenty."
"You said it with your whole chest. I still checked."
Their mother sat on an overturned bucket at the edge, a thermos in her mittens, watching the three of us.
Dottie handed me a pair of rental skates that were a size too big.
"Wear two pairs of socks," she ordered. "I brought you mine."
They were purple, with a hole in one toe.
I put them on.
Nobody had said a word about the film room, the vote, or the truck, and the silence was thick enough to skate on.
"Okay," Dottie announced, wobbling out onto the ice with her cast held up like a torch. "Rules."
"There are rules?" Rhett said.
"Of course there are rules. It's a game."
She planted herself between us.
"It's two against one. Me and Melina against you."
"That's unfair."
"You're the biggest. The loser tells the winners a true thing."
