Chapter 11: Dad

Kellan drove to Mabel's at dawn and I stayed in his kitchen with a mug of coffee going cold.

I could have gone with him.

He'd said it was his to do alone, and he was right.

So I sat at the table where I'd eaten a thousand dinners and tried not to look at the window.

He was gone an hour and ten minutes.

When the truck pulled in, I heard two doors.

I stood up too fast and knocked the chair over.

Marlee came through the kitchen door first.

Her eyes were swollen and she had no makeup on, and the pencil was gone from behind her ear.

Kellan came in behind her and shut the door and stood with his back against it.

"Hi," I said.

"Hi."

"I can go."

"Stay." Marlee dropped into a chair. "Dad says you should hear this too."

I sat down across from her.

Kellan stayed standing, because he's never sat for a hard conversation in his life.

"I told her everything," he said. "All of it."

"Everything," Marlee said. "He told me the part where he's been in love with you for four days and the part where he's been sick for four days. He told me the part about Mom."

I flinched.

"He told me she wasn't his fated mate," Marlee said. "I figured. I'm not stupid. They were great together but they never looked at each other the way you two do. It's gross, honestly."

"Sorry."

"Don't be sorry. It's like finding out your dog can talk."

She looked at her father.

"I'm happy that you're not dying," she said, "and I'm furious that you were going to."

"I wasn't going to."

"You were planning to keep saying no for six more days. That's dying, Dad. That's the math."

He lowered his head.

"You're right."
