Chapter 15: On the Record

The whole pack eats breakfast in the Grange lot on Sundays, off tailgates, in the cold.

At eight o'clock we walked into it, Marlee and Mom and me, with a brick in a grocery bag.

Ridley stood at the far end beside his pickup with a paper cup of coffee.

He saw the bag.

His thin smile came up.

"Morning, Everly," he said, in his reasonable voice. "I heard about the diner. Terrible thing."

Forty wolves went quiet and turned to look.

"Marlee," I said.

Marlee took the rubber band off the brick and held it under her nose.

She breathed in once.

"Him," she said. "Pine tar and chewing gum. It's all over the paper."

"Lots of men chew gum," Ridley said.

"Not on a rubber band."

I walked up to his pickup.

I looked into the bed, where a few green-white crumbs of window glass sat in the ridges of the liner.

"Mabel," I said. "Do you have the pack book?"

Mabel stepped out of the crowd with a black ledger under her arm.

"I always have the book."

"Then open it, please. I want this written down."

I turned back to Ridley.

"Where were you at two this morning?"
