Chapter 8: What Mabel Said
"I'm coming in," Mabel called through the door. "Cover whatever you've got to cover."
Kellan snatched the quilt off the cot and threw it over both of us.
I pulled it to my chin and tried to stop laughing.
It wasn't funny.
It was extremely funny.
The door opened and Mabel MacAskill came in with a flashlight, a thermos and two folded wool blankets under her arm.
She did not look at the table.
She did not look at our bare shoulders.
She set the blankets on the chair and the thermos on the stove.
"Cocoa," she said. "You'll want sugar. Sit up slowly, Everly. That tie takes its time."
"Aunt Mabel," Kellan said, in a strangled voice.
"I'm sixty-eight years old. I have been at more matings than you've had hot dinners. Hush."
She sat down on the cot across from us and put her cane across her knees.
For a moment nobody said anything.
The knot eased.
Kellan pulled out of me with a rough breath and wrapped me in the blanket before he even covered himself.
I loved him for it.
I wrapped my fingers in the wool and stayed upright, though every muscle felt like warm water.
"You've been busy, I see," Mabel said.
"Mabel," Kellan said. "Please."
"No, I won't, because I'm going to talk and you're going to listen. You've been carrying on like a boy in a barn for three days, saying no to a girl you can't keep your hands off. It's the dumbest thing I've seen in sixty years of watching you MacAskills, and that includes your grandfather and the goat."
"I'm trying to do right."
"You're trying to do what feels safe. That's different."
He didn't answer.
She turned to me.
"Everly, child. Do you know what happened to Anne?"
"She was sick," I said. "She died when I was sixteen."
"She died of cancer, and a lovely woman, too. Do you know whether she was his mate?"
