Chapter 9: Day Four

I didn't think.

I shoved through the loggers with my coffee still in my hand, dropped it in the sawdust and went down on my knees on the other side of Kellan.

"Move," Marlee said, and then, "No. Wait."

Her eyes dropped to my hand.

It was already on his chest.

I hadn't decided to put it there.

I felt his heart under my palm, racing and uneven, and the heat coming off him through the cloth, so strong it stung.

Then my wolf rose in my throat.

I didn't hear a sound.

I only felt something pour out of my hand and into him.

His breath caught.

The color came back into his face in a slow wave.

The red went out of his skin, and the sweat cooled, and his chest rose in one long, deep pull.

His eyes opened.

"Everly," he whispered.

"I'm here."

"You smell like coffee."

"I dropped it."

Nobody said a word.

A big logger in the back crossed himself, and he was a lapsed Methodist.

"Dad," Marlee said. She was holding his other hand. "Dad, you scared the hell out of me."

"I'm okay."

"You are not okay. You passed out in front of the whole crew."

"I need a minute."

He tried to sit up.

I pushed him back down with my palm.

His muscles tensed under my hand, and the skin of his chest went hot again in a spreading flush.

I leaned over him and pressed with both hands, and the heat withdrew again, shrinking in on itself.

"Stay down," I said.

"I'm not going to lie here and be tended in front of my own mill."
