Chapter 17: The Offer
The crew chief looked at Jonas, and Jonas nodded.
"Put him on speaker," I said.
The crew chief thumbed the screen and set the phone on the workbench between the boombox and a coffee can of bolts.
"Chief," said the Colonel's voice, easy as a hand on a shoulder. "Hope I'm not interrupting your Saturday."
"No, sir."
"I understand you have visitors. A sergeant with a very sharp tongue, and a captain who ought to be home."
The crew chief's eyes went to the window.
Across the road, parked in the neighbor's driveway with its engine off, sat a black truck.
Colby was behind the wheel, with a phone against his ear.
"The tracker," I said softly. "On my car."
"Tell Sergeant Pickens," the Colonel went on, "that I have something for her. Alone. My house, nineteen hundred."
"The captain isn't invited. I'd hate for him to take the evening badly."
The line clicked off.
Jonas had the cassette in his fist.
"You are not going in there alone."
"He asked for me."
