Chapter 6: Attached

Jonas let go of my wrist first.

He stepped back so fast the supply table scraped, and for a second neither of us looked at the other.

"Go home, Sergeant," he said, and his voice was rough.

"Yes, sir."

I went.

I did not sleep that night, and I do not think he did either.

At zero six hundred a courier from the Group put an envelope in my hand at the gate.

Darden read it over my shoulder and swore softly.

"Detached for field exercise," she read. "Third Special Forces Group, Camp Mackall, five days, as medic to Alpha team. Signed by the Group commander."

"That's Colby's team."

"That's the Colonel looking after his daughter's boyfriend."

She folded the paper.

"He can't touch your re-up, so he'll put you in a truck with the man for five days and see what you do."

"Captain Swafford can refuse it."

"The captain's already read it."

I turned and found him in the hangar door with his coffee untouched.

"I put in an objection," he said. "It was denied before breakfast."

"It's fine, sir."

"It isn't. But you're the best medic in the building."

"If that team gets hurt out there, I'd rather it be you holding the bag."

He said it to the air above my head.

I believed him.

Camp Mackall was pine woods and sand roads thirty miles west of the post.

There was a mock village at the end of one trail.

Colby's team of men in dusty gear stopped talking when I climbed out of the truck.

"Sergeant Pickens," Colby said, perfectly civil, "welcome. This is our team sergeant, Boyd Lindell."
