Chapter 18: Fire
I saw the glow from the rail bridge.
It stained the underside of the snow clouds the color of a stove coil.
The closer we got, the more it looked like a wound.
Ronan drove.
He drove the way he did everything, exact and very fast, and he did not say a word.
I held the dashboard with both hands.
The shop was already gone from the front.
The roll-up door was down and glowing orange along its seams, and flames ran along the roofline of the cinder-block shed.
A single fire engine had pulled up at the curb, and its crew was dragging a hose toward the hydrant.
The lot was full of black smoke and the stink of tires.
"Kieran!" I screamed, out of the car before it stopped.
A firefighter in a yellow coat caught my arm.
"Ma'am, you can't."
"My brother is inside."
"We're going in the back as soon as we have water. Stand over there."
"How long?"
"A few minutes."
"He doesn't have a few minutes!"
I tore my arm free.
