Chapter 20: The Ring
The phone showed one thread, saved under a single letter.
My voice was steadier than I expected.
"Ten fifty p.m. From D. 'After the plank, both of them.'"
Thirty men sat without moving.
"Ten fifty-eight. From the driver. 'In position. Cousin's alone with the boy.'"
"Eleven oh seven. 'Girl swung. Cousin's in the water. I fired.'"
"Eleven oh eight. From D. 'The boy too.'"
"Eleven oh nine. From the driver. 'Boy ran. Couldn't see him.'"
I stopped, and swallowed, and kept going.
"Eleven twelve. From D. 'Then say nothing, and I'll deal with him myself.'"
Somebody at the back of the room whispered a prayer.
My brother had run for his life that night.
He had run, and nobody had told him why.
"There's more," I said. "A Thursday in October, D to the driver. 'Meet at the Mystic landing. Bring the car.'"
"The driver never answered."
"They pulled him out of that river on the Sunday, dead since that Thursday, when he was supposed to be in Florida."
