I showed Ronan the photograph, and he went white around the mouth.
"No," he said.
"He said alone."
"He said a lot of things three years ago."
"Then listen to what I say now."
I was already dressed.
I stood in the bedroom doorway in jeans and boots and my coat.
I held the duffel his driver had packed from my apartment in the first week.
At the bottom of it, wrapped in a bath towel, lay a four-foot length of ash wood.
It was the pole of the boat hook, with the iron head long gone.
I had carried it home from the pier that night without knowing why, and I had hidden it in my closet for three years.
I unwrapped it, and he looked at it, his eyes softening.
"You kept it."
"I thought it was the proof I killed you."
I weighed it in my right hand.
"I'll walk out on that pier by myself, because he'll shoot Kieran if he sees anyone else."
"You will be a hundred yards behind me with your people. And I'm calling the police."
