Chapter 5: Her Terms

The car took us back to Beacon Hill in silence.

At the black door he used his thumb on the lock and let me walk in ahead of him.

I stopped on the first landing.

Kieran had gone gray under the shop lights, and Ronan had asked him nothing.

I knew that I should be thinking about that.

I was not thinking about it.

I was thinking about the cut on his lip, and about the way his hand had closed on my coat.

"Your bedroom," I said. "Which floor?"

He stopped two steps below me.

"Third."

"Is the door locked?"

"Not to me."

"Then open it."

His eyes held on my face a long moment.

He went up past me and opened a door at the end of the third-floor hall.

It was a dark room with a low bed and a window full of the city.

He stood there with the light off and waited for me to go in first.

I went in.

I took off the wet coat and dropped it on a chair.

Then I turned around and put both hands flat on his chest and pushed him back until his knees hit the bed.

"Sit."

He sat.

He watched me with his hands on his thighs, still, and that stillness made my stomach drop.

"I don't forgive you," I said. "I want that clear."

"Clear."

"You had a gun on my brother."

"Yes."

"Tonight I want you anyway."

"Then take me, Neve."

I pulled my vest off over my head and dropped it.

I unbuttoned the white shirt underneath one button at a time, slowly, because I wanted him to watch.

He did.

His jaw tightened when the shirt came open.

He looked at my breasts in the black bra.

I stepped between his knees.

He caught my hips and pulled me in and put his mouth against my stomach.
