Chapter 10: The Cup

Jonah's POV

I had hunted rogues for fifteen years, and I knew what a lie looks like when it is trying to be kind.

Bree Rennick sat down next to my prisoner with a cup in her hands, and every line of her was gentle.

The girl was good.

She was better than good, and that was what set my teeth on edge.

I watched Ivy take the cup and not lift it.

I watched Bree's eyes go to the rim and stay there.

It was the smallest thing.

Anyone else in the hall would have called it worry.

I called it a woman counting.

I crossed the floor.

"Miss Rennick," I said. "You are my guest tonight. Let me see you settled."

"Oh, Alpha Dray, I don't need anything." She smiled up at me with wet lashes. "I only wanted her to drink her tea. She hasn't eaten, and it settles her stomach."

"Does she drink it every day?"

"Every morning since our father died." Bree touched her locket. "I make it myself."

Ivy's eyes came up to mine.

They were silver at the edges, and they said what she would not say with Bree's hand on her sleeve.

I took the cup from her.

It was warm, and the smell hit me when I brought it close.

Honey and mint and under them a thin sharp edge of metal that I had smelled once before, years ago, on a dying wolf.

Wolfsbane steeped in iron water.

It makes a wolf sleepy and cold, and it keeps her from ever feeling her own wolf.

Healers use it in small doses on the wounded.

No healer gives it every day for ten months.

"My house, my cup," I said lightly, and Bree's smile did not change at all. "I'll have it sent to my healer and brought back warm."
