Chapter 4: The Phone

"Three people live in the Alpha house," I said. "Me, Dane, and my adopted sister, Bree."

"I heard that in the courtyard."

"My phone sat on the kitchen table from lunch until the horns blew. I left it there while I walked the north wall with the sentries."

"Anyone can say that."

"Then ask the sentries. They saw me on the wall from one o'clock until dusk."

"I will."

"Good."

"Anyone can," I agreed. "But think about the message."

Jonah crouched lower and said nothing.

"The Moon Fair is in four days, at Grimjaw. You and Corinne were both coming as our guests."

"Yes."

"Why would I send your sister into the Shadow Forest the week you were visiting me?"

"To end the treaty," Jonah said. "Grimjaw's elders were split on it."

"I wasn't split. I wrote half of that treaty."

"Dane told us you were against it."

"Dane told you that?"

He nodded once.

"Dane never asked me what I thought of it," I said. "He never asked me what I thought of anything after the bonding."

Jonah's jaw tightened.

I watched him weigh it, and I could see he did not want to.

"Your sister cried at your gate for an hour," he said. "My Beta saw it. She begged us to spare you."

"Of course she did."

"What does that mean?"

"Nothing," I said, because I did not yet know what it meant.

I only knew the smell of her vanilla soap had made my skin crawl in front of four hundred wolves.
