Chapter 5: The Two Alphas

Jonah did not leave me in the barn.

Two guards unlocked the cage and marched me up the hill to the south gate in my chain, and Jonah stood waiting at the top with his arms folded.

"If he wants you," he said, "he can look at you in front of my wolves."

At the gate, three Grimjaw cars sat in the dawn with their headlights still on.

Dane stood in front of them with eleven of my old guards behind him.

He had put on a clean coat, but his face under the grey light was the colour of wet paper.

When he saw me, something flickered in his eyes.

It was not hatred.

"Alpha Dray," Dane said. "You have my thanks for keeping her safe. Now give her over."

"No," Jonah said.

A murmur went through the Venomfang wolves on the wall.

"She is a Grimjaw wolf," Dane said. "Grimjaw law says a traitor to the pack dies by the pack's hand."

"She harmed my sister," Jonah said. "The Accord says the harmed Alpha holds blood-right until the Moot. That law is older than yours."

"Then I will pay you for the right."

"I don't want your money."

"What do you want?"

"I want nine days," Jonah said. "And I want to hear what she says at the Moot."

Dane's hand curled at his side, and I saw his knuckles shake.

"She is guilty," he said. "My Luna has already seen it."

"Your Luna," I said. "Bree is not your Luna, Dane."

Every head turned toward me.

For one second his eyes blazed, and I saw a hot, ugly fear behind them.

"Be silent," Dane said.
