Chapter 10: The Tenth Anniversary
On Sunday at four o'clock, a man in a gray suit stood at the head of the Bexley dining table.
He held a leather folder.
He was the family's lawyer, and he looked exhausted.
Lowell sat on his left.
Gwendolyn sat beside him with her hands folded.
Preston sat across from them, white-faced, and Kendra was not there.
Ford sat at the foot with me, in the chair by the kitchen door.
I had not asked him what the letter was.
On Thursday night I had lain next to him in the cabin, awake.
I had decided this was the one thing I would let him tell me himself.
He had not.
"Thank you all for coming," the lawyer said. "Ten years ago today, the founder of this company died."
He turned the folder over.
"By his instruction, a sealed trust opens in this room on the tenth anniversary, at four o'clock, in front of his family."
The grandfather clock in the hall began to strike.
Nobody moved.
"Lowell knew about the trust," the lawyer said. "He has never seen what is in it."
"It's a formality," Lowell said, a half second late. "Dad left me the company."
"He left you the title of chief executive," the lawyer said. "He left someone else the vote."
He broke the seal.
The paper made a dry sound in the quiet room.
"The controlling voting shares of Bexley Hotels," he read, "have been held in trust for ten years and pass today to my younger son, Ford Bexley, provided that on this day he is lawfully married."
Gwendolyn's hands came apart.
"I have seen what money does to a man standing alone," the lawyer read. "A man with a wife does not sell himself."
