Chapter 23: Marriage

We got married on the infield at six in the evening, with the grass still warm from the sun.

I wore a plain ivory dress that Marge had hemmed at her kitchen table.

She had told me to hold still so many times that I almost stabbed her with a pin.

She stood beside me now in her best flowered dress, her glasses on their beaded chain, as the witness.

The judge who had signed the order that gave me back my son stood on the pitcher's mound with a folded sheet of paper.

She had volunteered.

"I've never done this in a ballpark," she told me quietly. "I find I'm looking forward to it."

There were nine people in the stands.

The groundskeepers, the catcher, the first baseman, and the closer with the red beard, who was already crying.

Jamie walked down the first-base line in his mask and a little Herons blazer with the rings tied to his cap.

He took each step.

He stopped in front of me and held up the cap.
