Chapter 10: Rule Two

Hester told me in the cab of Ronan's truck, with her knitting in her lap and her eyes on the dark road.

"She wasn't sick."

I sat very still and said nothing.

"She wasted. Thinner every week, no fever, nothing the doctor could find. I took her to every clinic on the human side." Hester's voice cracked. "It was the Dunmoor clinic that sent her the herbal tonic, free, for her nerves."

I didn't breathe.

"I can't prove it. I couldn't then and I can't now. I told you fever because if I had told you the truth, you would have walked into that house at twelve years old and died there."

"Gram."

"I'll take whatever you want to say to me, child. Say it tomorrow."

I said nothing at all.

Ronan drove, and Nash followed in the second truck.

When we reached Ashfang the cook put Hester to bed with warm milk, and I was shown to the guest room again and sat on the edge of the bed in the dark.

I sat there a long time.

Then I got up and went down the hall to the only door with a light under it.

I knocked once.

Ronan opened it in his shirtsleeves.

He took one look at my face and stepped back to let me in.

"I'm not here to talk," I said.

"Roxanne." He shut the door. "Rule two."

"It's void."

"You wrote it, you said it, and you meant it. I'll hold to it as long as you want me to."

"I'm breaking it."

"Say it again."

"I'm breaking it." My voice was shaking, and I didn't care. "I'm done being careful, and I'm done being good, and I want you to touch me. Right now."

For a second he didn't move.

Then he was across the room, and his hands were in my hair, and his mouth came down on mine.

It was nothing like the quiet, careful man in the barn.

He kissed me hard, and three years of waiting were in it.
