Chapter 12: The Nurse at Pine Ridge

Roxanne's POV

I woke up with my heart pounding and the taste of copper in my mouth.

For a second I didn't know whose rage it was.

It was hot and clean and mine, and it had gone through my whole body from somewhere a long way off.

I looked at my left wrist.

The silver crescent was pulsing.

Ronan's side of the bed was cold.

I threw my clothes on in a rush and went down to find the cook, who handed me a bagel and a set of keys.

"He took the black truck," she said. "He said if you woke up and came after him, tell you Pine Ridge."

"What's at Pine Ridge?"

"I'm the cook," she said. "I only know about eggs."

I drove my Subaru the whole way with the window open and one hand on the wheel.

The Pine Ridge care home was a low brick building behind a parking lot of old Buicks.

Ronan and Nash were waiting by the door.

Ronan had not slept, and there was gravel dust on one sleeve.

I stopped a pace in front of him.

"You put Warrick on his truck," I said.

"I did."

"I felt it."

His eyes went to my wrist, and then back.

"Does it bother you?"

"I want to know why you did it." I kept my voice level. "I need to know what you want, Ronan. You don't get to be kind to me for nine days and then take the Bloodmoon land when it's over."

"I don't want the land."

"Everyone wants the land."

"Then everyone can have it." He didn't blink. "I'll sign a paper tonight, in front of whoever you like. Every acre I'd get from this goes to your pack, or to nobody. I'd like you alive, Roxanne, and I'd like you free, and I'd like you to look at me like you looked at me last night. That's the whole list."
