Chapter 6: The First Shift

My spine bowed, and my ribs gave, and then the pain stopped.

I was standing on four feet.

The porch boards felt strange and warm through the pads of my paws.

I could smell everything at once: the pine sap, the oil on the shotgun, and fear coming off six wolves in a single sour wave.

One of Warrick's men went down on one knee in the gravel.

He didn't mean to.

His face was stunned, and he stayed there with his head lowered.

"Get up," Warrick snapped at him.

The man tried and could not.

Another wolf bent his neck, then a third, and Nash on the step beside me dropped to both knees and said very softly, "Lowry."

I looked down at my own front paws.

They were silver-gray, the pale shade of frost on a window.

My wolf lifted her head and let out a sound that rang off every wall of the cabin.

Warrick took a step back and caught himself.

I saw him do it, saw his hand tighten on the leather case.

"This is not over," he said. His voice was thin. "A Lowry cannot take the signature by force or by theft. She has been taken from her Alpha's roof by an outsider, and I will say so to the Council of Alphas."

He looked at me, and for the first time all day his face held no performance in it.

"The hearing is in nine days. You'll come, or you'll be called a stolen Luna and hunted by any wolf who wants the reward."

He snapped his fingers.

The wolves who could stand got up, and the two who couldn't were hauled to their feet, and the whole line turned and went down the road.

Warrick was the last, and he did not look back.

I was no longer sure I could stand.
