Chapter 24: Room 1112

Nelson came back across the ballroom slowly, with the phone in his hand.

Eight hundred people watched him come.

I could not read his face, and I had learned to read it in seven weeks.

He stopped in front of me.

"He conceded," he said.

The ballroom did not understand at first.

"He said the numbers in Black Hawk and Scott were not going to come back."

"He said he would make a statement at midnight, and he'd like to congratulate me first."

"He said, 'Tell the Hallam girl I said good night.'"

My hands flew to my mouth.

Hallie screamed. It was a long, high Minnesotan scream, and she threw her thermos in the air.

It came down on a table and bounced off a cake.

The whole room went up.

My father picked up Nelson in a bear hug and held him off the floor.

"Put me down, Orrin," said the Senator-elect.

"Not yet."

They put him on the stage at midnight, in front of the blue banner.

He took the microphone off the stand and held it in both hands.

He had no notes.

"I'll be brief," he said. "I always say that, and Hallie always laughs."

Hallie, in the front row, laughed.

"Eighteen months ago I was a man who fixed rural roads and wrote letters to the families of people the roads had killed."

"I didn't know how to ask anybody for anything."

"Tonight I owe four hundred thousand people, one at a time."
