Chapter 13: The Lake Lot
I put the glass down on the stage and said into the microphone, "Excuse me. A friend needs help."
Then I walked out through a hundred round tables with the whole ballroom watching.
Gordon's hand slid off my shoulder as I went.
Adrienne stood by the bar.
She didn't nod and she didn't smile, but she lifted her sparkling water one inch as I passed.
My roommate was waiting at the curb in his ancient hatchback with the engine running.
He had said he would wait for the first sign of trouble.
"Kendra?" he asked when I got in.
"She texted. Someone is outside her house."
"Wes, she's the girl who tied you to a statue."
"She's the girl whose own sisters turned on her, and now somebody is scaring her."
He pulled out without another word.
I called her on speaker, and it rang six times.
"Hello?" Her voice was a whisper.
"It's Wesley. Where are you?"
"I left the house. There was a gray sedan parked across the street with its lights off, and a man sitting in it."
