Chapter 16: First Call

"I didn't do anything to you," I said. "You answered her first for three years, and I stopped waiting."

Dean turned in his chair.

He wasn't looking at me anymore.

He was looking at Brandy's father, who had gone gray under his quilted vest.

"This is your fault," Dean said. "You and your wife made her this way. You wrapped her in cotton."

"Careful," Brandy's father said.

"I've been carrying your daughter for eight years, and you let me."

"Dean, stop," Brandy whispered.

"You're done," Dean said to her father. "You hear me? You're no longer my lender. I'll find the money somewhere that doesn't come with a hysterical daughter."

The room was so quiet I could hear the elevator running.

Brandy's father closed the lender's folder, slowly.

"You're right about one thing, son," he said. "I'm done."

"Good."

"The inn will call the loan in thirty days. The note says we may if you stop acting in good faith, and I'd say the last hour has settled that."

Dean's mouth opened.

The thin man with the tablet said, very softly, "That's two million, due in thirty days, plus the three point eight million to Ms. Gruber on the thirty-first."

Dean stared at him.

"Say it again."

"Nobody has to," I said.

Then Brandy stood up, and her face had changed completely.

The sweetness was gone out of it, and what was left was raw.

"You told me she'd never leave," she said to Dean.
