Chapter 12: The Voice Memo

I sat on the edge of the bed with Candice's phone in both hands.

There was one file on the screen, a voice memo, dated six days ago.

Under it she had typed, I should have given this to you at the bar. I'm sorry I'm a coward.

I pressed play.

There was the clink of a glass, and then Brandon's voice, close and relaxed, the voice he used when he thought nobody mattered.

"You worry too much, Candice."

"I worry about her," Candice's voice said. "She's nice."

"She's perfect. That's why I picked her."

I stopped breathing.

"A year ago," Brandon said, "at Grandma's birthday dinner, Geoff sat there with that face and told me I couldn't keep a girl a year. Not one. Said I get bored in a semester."

"So you made a bet."

"The Mustang. Grandpa left it to Geoff to keep, so his name's on the deed note and the keys are his."

"And you put up what?"

"Nothing. That's the beauty. If I'm still with a girl on the fourteenth, he signs the car over to me."

He laughed.

"Grandma's dinner, whole family there, everybody watches him hand me the keys."

"And you picked Miranda."

"Library desk. Hazel eyes, no family money, never said no to anybody. I took her picture and showed Geoff that same week, just to watch him not say anything."
