Chapter 30: Spring
I read it standing behind the counter with the coffee pot still in my other hand.
Then I read it again.
The cook leaned out of the pass-through.
"Bad news?"
"They want to see me."
"Who?"
"The fellowship."
He looked at me for a long second.
Then he went back into the kitchen and I heard him say, "Hell yes," to the grill.
The interview was the second Tuesday in January, in a conference room on the third floor of the journalism building.
Three professors sat on one side of a long table.
A woman from the Cleveland paper sat on a laptop screen at the end, in a cardigan, with a dog barking somewhere behind her.
I wore my blazer.
I'd ironed it twice.
They asked about sources.
They asked about the Night Owl's tape and the dates on the period account.
Then the woman on the screen leaned toward her camera.
"Here's my problem, Ms. Burkett," she said. "For most of this story, you were the story. Why should I trust you to report one?"
