I looked at the two signatures for a long time.
The diner hummed around us.
The cook was scraping the grill.
The owner was counting the register, pretending not to watch.
"It's a three-bedroom," Corey said. "So nobody has to sleep on the floor."
"Nobody's slept on the floor since December," Crew said.
"It's a figure of speech."
"It's a floor plan."
"You picked a house," I said. "Without me."
They both went quiet.
"We picked one we could show you," Crew said. "If you hate it, we tear it up. You know how."
"Corey drove up four times," he added. "He made the landlord measure the kitchen."
"Your mom's going to visit," Corey said. "She needs counter space."
I laughed, and my eyes stung, and I let them.
I took the pen from behind my ear.
I'd been carrying a pen there since my first shift.
I signed my name on the third line.
It didn't shake.
I slid the lease back across the table with two fingers.
"Rule one," I said. "I get the room with the window."
