Chapter 16: The Break-In

The medical records room at Lakeshore General was in the basement, past the laundry and a hall of humming pipes.

A strip of yellow tape ran across the door with a court seal on it.

PRESERVATION ORDER. DO NOT ENTER.

The tape had been cut.

The guard from the Pendelton Wing stood beside it with a flashlight, his big shoulders filling the corridor.

"He's been in there forty minutes," he said to Nathaniel. "I didn't go in. You told me not to touch anything."

"You did right."

"Ma'am." He nodded at me. "I worked this wing eleven years. I never liked him being kind to everybody."

I could hear a machine behind the door, chewing.

Nathaniel took out his phone and began to film.

I pushed the door open.

Rows of steel shelves ran back into the dark, packed with gray folders.

At the far end, under one hanging bulb, Dr. Lyle stood in his white coat beside an industrial shredder.

A cart of folders waited at his elbow.

He was feeding pages into the mouth of the machine one at a time, with his sleeves pushed up.
